Google Announces Can’t Be Missed Press Event On Search – What’s Up?

Google’s announced a special press event for next Wednesday on search that “you won’t want to miss.” What big news could there be? Let’s speculate — but I wouldn’t get too excited.

Here’s what the invite says:

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 8, to share our latest technological innovation and to get an inside look at the evolution of Google search. Speakers include:

Marissa Mayer, VP, Search Products & User Experience

Johanna Wright, Director of Product Management

Ben Gomes, Distinguished Engineer

Othar Hansson, Senior Staff Software Engineer

It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

My guess is that this will be similar to the “Searchology” events that Google’s held in 2007 and 2009. This is a general update on things Google’s doing in search, usually peppered with a few product announcements, but nothing that dramatically huge. Last year, we got news of Google Squared, Rich Snippets and Google Sky.

This event features fewer speakers, though interestingly, it’s being held at San Francisco’s Museum Of Modern Art. Perhaps a clue there?

Engadget - Eager to get on the new Apple TV‘s cheap 99-cent TV show rentals but not so pumped to wait four weeks for it to ship? No worries: Amazon’s also now offering 99-cent rentals purchases of various ABC and FOX shows, which means a whole host of Amazon VOD-compatible devices just got some cheaper streaming options as well — and hey, Roku just cut prices on its entire lineup of Amazon- and Netflix- compatible players, so you can get in the game for as little as $60. Of course, the Apple TV also features day-and-date movie rentals, local streaming, AirPlay, and that slick iPhone / iPod touch Remote app, but only your heart truly knows if those are worth an extra few bucks and a month of fevered desire.

Amazon Grabs the TV Remote

Amazon.com Inc. is working on a new subscription service that would deliver TV shows and movies over the Internet, ramping up the battle among Web companies to control entertainment in the living room.

The Internet retailer has in recent weeks pitched a Web-based subscription service to several major media companies, including General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal, Time Warner Inc., News Corp. and Viacom Inc., among others, according to people with knowledge of the proposal.
