100,000 iPhone Apps!

Apple has officially reported what we figured out last week: the App Store now has over 100,000 apps. Keep in mind that the App Store didn’t even exist until July of 2008. So that’s 100,000 apps in about fifteen months.

When you consider that Apple hit the65,000 app mark in August, the continued development pace is nothing short of outstanding. Although some might argue that as a phone, the iPhone comes up short, as an application platform, it’s the leader of the pack.

148Apps.biz has broken down the applications in the US App Store by price, category and release date (hat-tip to Phillip Elmer-DeWitt). According to 148App.biz’s charts, Games take up the largest percentage of iPhone apps, with 16% of the total. Entertainment and Books follow with 13% each.
